Embedded Systems Engineer
WHR Global Consulting
Job Summary:
The PLC & Embedded Systems Engineer will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining industrial PLC hardware and software solutions. This role includes developing real-time operating systems (RTOS), building IEC 61131-3 compliant PLC runtimes, designing industrial-grade hardware, and implementing reliable communication protocols. The engineer will collaborate closely with software and hardware teams to ensure safe, compliant, and high-performance industrial automation systems. The role requires hands-on experience in embedded programming, hardware design, industrial I/O, and system integration, with a strong focus on functional safety, testing, and documentation.
Key Responsibilities:
- RTOS & PLC Runtime
- Develop or port real-time operating systems for industrial PLCs.
- Implement deterministic task scheduling, secure boot, and OTA firmware updates.
- Build IEC 61131-3 compliant runtime, supporting ST, LD, FBD, SFC, IL.
- Manage PLC scan cycles, task priorities, and process data.
Hardware Design
- Design PLC hardware (ARM Cortex-M/R or RISC-V) including CPU, I/O, and communication modules.
- Create schematics, PCB layouts, and prototypes for industrial enclosures.
- Ensure reliability across temperature ranges and oversee testing.
- Industrial Communication
- Implement OPC-UA, Modbus RTU/TCP, and plan for EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, MQTT.
- Ensure low-latency, deterministic communication.
Software Integration
- Collaborate with software teams on PLC IDE targets and tag/variable exchange.
- Enable real-time diagnostics and monitoring via OPC-UA.
Safety & Compliance
- Follow IEC 61508 functional safety standards.
- Prepare for CE marking, EMC testing, and IEC 61131-2 compliance.
- Maintain documentation for certification readiness.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or equivalent practical experience.
- Minimum of 5 years in embedded systems development, including at least 2 years in industrial automation or PLC-related environments.
- Proven experience with FreeRTOS, Zephyr, NuttX, or custom RTOS kernels; strong understanding of IEC 61131-3 standards, PLC scan cycles, and deterministic task scheduling.
- Advanced proficiency in C/C++ for bare-metal and RTOS firmware; experience with GCC/LLVM toolchains on ARM Cortex-M/R or RISC-V platforms.
- Experience in PCB layout and schematic capture; industrial I/O circuits including ADC/DAC interfacing and 4–20 mA current loops.
- Familiarity with OPC-UA, Modbus RTU/TCP, RS-485, and Ethernet; exposure to industrial protocols such as EtherNet/IP or PROFINET is a plus.
- Skilled in using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, JTAG/SWD debuggers, and HIL testing; proficient in Git for version control and documentation management.
- Embedded Rust, IEC 61131-3 compiler development, FPGA/SoC design, functional safety (IEC 61508), telemetry/messaging protocols (MQTT, Kafka), power electronics, 3D mechanical design, and product certification (CE, UL, FCC, IEC).
